Switch Things Up

I enjoyed shaping the trunk most of all — it feels like sculpting with yarn and gives the piece personality.

I recommend testing branch placement with pins; I adjusted several times before sewing for the best balance.

I sometimes add more or fewer soil dents to give different textures; try different counts and see which you prefer.

I like to place heavier leaves lower on the trunk so the tree stands without tipping.

I find using a long yarn tail through the soil gives a realistic tufted look when tightened and knotted.

I sometimes swap colors for a unique look — a darker pot or lighter leaves changes the whole mood.

I always sew parts loosely at first, check the composition, then tighten and secure when happy.

I suggest keeping spare yarn lengths when finishing so you can retacken small adjustments later.

I like to block the leaves slightly flat before sewing them on; it helps them sit neatly against branches.

I hope you have as much fun assembling this bonsai as I did making it — enjoy the process!

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

✗ Skipping stitch markers when moving the start of rounds can cause misaligned shaping; always mark the new start. ✗ Using the wrong yarn weight will change proportions dramatically; match the recommended DK/light worsted yarn. ✗ Overstuffing the soil or tree trunk makes seams difficult to close; stuff gradually and check shape often. ✗ Attaching branches without planning weight distribution can cause the tree to tip; place heavier leaves lower and test balance.

Get a long strand of dark brown yarn and pull the yarn with your sewing needle or crochet hook through the soil, from top to bottom and back. Tighten the yarn, this way little dents will occur. Make two flat knots on top of each other to secure the yarn. Repeat this 16 times, or as much as you like. This will give the soil some strenght and a more natural look.

Place the soil in the flowerpot and sew it in place.

— How to put all leaves and branches of the tree together :

Infos :

Some things to keep in mind: Divide the tree in three parts. - Place the heaviest leaves (A) and their branches mostly on the bottom third of the tree, but maybe also one in the middle (depending on how many leaves you want to add yourself). - Place the lightest leaves (C) and their branches on the top third of the tree. - Place the medium weight leaves (B) and their branches on the middle part and bottom third of the tree.

Assembly tips :

First, sew all branches onto the tree, one by one. And then, sew the matching leaves (type A leaves for type A branches, etc) onto the branches. Keep the edge of the leaf close to the tree itself. Repeat until all branches and leaves are sewn onto the tree. When finally sewing all branches and leaves onto the tree, make sure all leaves are pointing in the same direction. Use small pins or small skewer sticks to try out different positions with leaves on the tree trunk until you are happy with the final composition.

Final :

Congratulations! Your tree is finished!

Assembly Instructions

  • Sew the tree onto the soil by placing the trunk bottom in the center of the soil cushion and sewing through the soil to secure it in place.
  • Sew the soil into the flowerpot, attaching it securely along the top edge so it sits flat inside the pot.
  • Sew the four supports under the flowerpot corners, spacing them so the supports sit under each corner with 8 rounds distance from pot top to support edge.
  • Sew branches onto the trunk first (one by one), then sew matching leaves to each branch (type A leaves to A branches, etc.).
  • Arrange leaves and branches with pins to adjust balance before final sewing; place heavier leaves lower to prevent tipping.
  • Place stones on the soil next to the trunk (stone A slightly on top of B, and stone C next to A and B with 1-2 sc in between).

Important Notes

  • 💡This pattern is worked in spirals unless otherwise stated; use stitch markers to track starts and moves.
  • 💡Do not stuff the flowerpot; stuff soil and tree trunk as indicated and check shape frequently.
  • 💡Use small amounts of stuffing when shaping supports and branches to avoid bulky seams.
  • 💡When pulling the long strand through the soil to create dents, repeat the knots up to 16 times for a natural look.
  • 💡Keep this pattern sheet near your work so you can check abbreviations and the stitch counts while crocheting.

FAQs

What size will the finished bonsai be?

When made with the described yarn and hook size, the bonsai tree will be about 22 cm (9") tall and about 25 cm (10") wide.

Can I use a different yarn weight?

You can substitute yarn weight, but the finished size and proportions will change. Use a hook appropriate for your chosen yarn and expect a different final scale.

How much stuffing should I use?

Stuff the soil and tree gradually as indicated. Do not overstuff the pot or supports; add more stuffing to the tree base only if needed to help the tree stand upright.

How do I keep the tree balanced?

Arrange heavier leaves on the lower third and lighter leaves on the upper third. Use small pins to test leaf positions before sewing permanently.
