About This Clarence the Peckish Plant Amigurumi Pattern

Clarence the Peckish Plant is a fun, detailed amigurumi project that creates a whimsical potted plant with a chomping mouth, removable head elements and poseable vines. The pattern includes the pot, inner mouth, head halves, lips, fangs, petals, stems, leaves, vines and charming finishing details.

Clarence the Peckish Plant Amigurumi Pattern crochet pattern - detailed view of completed project

Worked mostly in single crochet with some front/back loop shaping, this design uses pipe cleaners or wire to give the vines poseability. Full step-by-step rounds, materials and assembly instructions are included to help you finish a polished character.

Why You'll Love This Clarence the Peckish Plant Amigurumi Pattern

I absolutely love this pattern because it blends playful character design with practical construction techniques that make the finished plant feel alive. I enjoyed designing the removable mouth and wired vines so you can pose Clarence however you like. The pattern lets me combine simple crochet rounds with sewing and a little embroidery for personality. I also love that it uses common DK cotton yarns and a small 3mm hook, so the finished piece is durable and has a great stitch definition.

Switch Things Up

I love how easy it is to change the character of Clarence by swapping yarn colours; try pastel shades for a gentler friend or bold brights for a more playful look.

To make a mini keychain version, use fingering weight yarn and a 2.25mm hook and shorten the stem and vines accordingly.

If you prefer a chunkier, cuddlier plant, use a bulky yarn with a larger hook and increase stuffing slightly for more volume.

I often add embroidered eyelashes or tiny felt accessories like a bow to change the personalityβ€”these small details make each one unique.

Try varying the number of protective spikes and the length of wispy hair for different personalities: more spikes for a feistier plant, longer hair for a whimsical look.

Make the vines extra posable by swapping pipe cleaners for thin floral wire if you want a sleeker finish and tighter curves.

For a more realistic leaf, use two-tone yarn or carry up a contrasting strand for subtle colour changes in the leaves and petals.

I sometimes fill the pot base with a small bag of weighted beads or a balloon weight before stuffing the soil so the finished piece is more stable on shelves.

Want a seasonal spin? Add a tiny crocheted hat or a mini scarf to Clarence to celebrate holidays or to give as a themed gift.

When embroidering veins, experiment with length and placement of the side veins to create different leaf stylesβ€”more veins give a delicate look while fewer, bolder veins read as graphic and modern.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

βœ— Skipping the slip stitch rounds when forming the pot lip can make it difficult to attach the soil; fold and join the lip exactly as instructed to create a neat rim and reinforcement. βœ— Failing to add pipe cleaners inside the lips and vines will make them floppy and hard to pose; double up and insert pipe cleaners before closing seams for extra strength. βœ— Not counting stitches at each increase round may produce an uneven petal or stem join; count after each round, especially at repeat rounds and when joining petals into the stem. βœ— Overstuffing the head or body will distort shaping and make seams bulky; stuff gradually, shape as you go and leave small gaps to close neatly. βœ— Ignoring working into front/back loops when instructed will lose the subtle bends in the stem; follow the BLO/FLO instructions carefully to create the intended curvature.

β€” Assembly :

Info :

First we will add stuffing to the plant pot. To keep the base flat it helps to add in a circle of felt or thick card into the base before adding the stuffing.

Info :

Place the stem and soil into the pot, then add plenty of stuffing. Sew the Grippy Leaves to the sides of the body, either side of the bend - push the ends of the pipe cleaners into the body before sewing.

Info :

Secure the Twirly Vines to the soil behind the body, pushing the ends of the pipe cleaners into the soil. Spread the vines evenly around the back of the plant, you can twist together the leftover parts of the pipe cleaners inside the pot.

Info :

Sew down each vine, then curl up the ends. Add stuffing to the body, leaving some space on the top for the head. Place the head into the neck opening, choosing the direction you would like it to look in.

Info :

With a tail of lilac yarn sew the head into the neck, first going through each stitch of the back seam and the 3 back petals, then go around the lower half of the head stitching where the chin sits on the petals. Turn up the corners of the mouth into a cheeky smile. Sew the Protective Spikes randomly over the body and catch each one to the head with a tail of green yarn to help the back petals stand up.

Info :

Embroider spots on the top of the head and then embroider veins onto the leaves using purple yarn, going through both layers of the fabric and doubling for a raised look. Open the mouth and sew the tongue to the inside letting it flop to the side. Arrange wispy hair and stitch in place evenly across the top of the head.

Assembly Instructions

  • Cut a circle of felt, foam or thick card to fit the base of the pot and place into the pot before adding stuffing to keep the base flat and stable.
  • Place the soil piece inside the pot and work the joining round through both the soil and the pot lip slip stitch round to secure the soil in place.
  • Sew the Grippy Leaves to the sides of the body and push the ends of the pipe cleaners into the body before sewing to add strength and poseability.
  • Secure the Twirly Vines to the soil behind the body, push the ends of the doubled pipe cleaners into the soil and twist any leftover wire inside the pot for extra stability.
  • Sew the head into the neck opening with a tail of lilac yarn, stitching through each stitch of the back seam and petal points then around the chin area to secure the head firmly.
  • Arrange the wispy hair and decorative spots, embroider veins onto the leaves with purple yarn, and sew fangs and tongue to the mouth interior in the spots you prefer.

Important Notes

  • πŸ’‘Work with consistent tension throughout to maintain even shaping and to match the sample size as closely as possible.
  • πŸ’‘Use pipe cleaners or doubled wire inside the vines and lips before closing seams to ensure they are poseable and strong.
  • πŸ’‘Pin or hold parts in place and count stitches before sewing to avoid misaligned joins and gaps in the finished amigurumi.
  • πŸ’‘When adding the pot lip stabiliser, trim and test the strip first so the lip folds neatly and sits flush with the pot edge.

FAQs

What size will the finished piece be?

The finished amigurumi measures around 27cm / 10Β½in tall when made in DK weight cotton with a 3mm hook.

Can I use different yarn weights for this pattern?

Yes, you can use different yarn weights but it will change the final size and stitch counts; use an appropriate hook for your chosen yarn and be prepared to adjust stuffing and pipe cleaner lengths.

Do I need prior crochet experience for this pattern?

This pattern is rated intermediate, so basic knowledge of crochet stitches, working in rounds, and sewing pieces together is recommended for best results.

How long does this project typically take to complete?

Most crafters will take multiple sessions to complete Clarence; expect approximately 12-15 hours depending on experience and how many embellishments you add.

How do I make the vines poseable?

Insert length(s) of pipe cleaners or strong wire into the vines before closing seams; doubling the pipe cleaners increases strength and allows you to shape the vines after assembly.
