About This Fuyuko The Kitsune Amigurumi Pattern

This pattern teaches you to crochet Fuyuko, a delicate kitsune with nine tails and soft fur detail. Youll work mainly in rounds with simple increases and decreases to shape the head, body, legs, and tails. The pattern includes color-change instructions to blend sky blue tips into each tail for a magical finish.

Why You'll Love This Fuyuko The Kitsune Amigurumi Pattern

I absolutely love this pattern because it blends classic amigurumi shaping with whimsical details like nine gradient tails and a fluffy neck ruff. I enjoyed designing the color transitions to give the tails a soft, magical look. I take pride in the clear assembly steps that make joining multiple parts less intimidating. Seeing Fuyuko come together is always rewarding, and I know youll feel that delight too when you finish yours.

Switch Things Up

I love how easy it is to customize Fuyuko by changing the colors β€” try pastel shades for a softer, nursery-friendly look or deep jewel tones for a dramatic, evening-inspired kitsune.

To make Fuyuko larger or smaller, experiment with yarn weight and hook size: bulky yarn with a larger hook creates a cuddly, oversized fox while fingering weight yarn with a smaller hook makes a delicate miniature.

I often add small accessories like a tiny crochet flower, collar, or a ribbon around the neck to give each kitsune a unique personality.

For different tail effects, try ombre yarns or hand-paint the tips with diluted fabric dye for a watercolor finish instead of changing yarn colors mid-round.

If you want posable limbs, insert light-gauge wire into the legs before stuffing, making sure to secure and hide wire ends safely inside the body for child-safe play.

Try embroidering different eye shapes β€” slightly curved or longer lashes change the expression dramatically; place the eyes a stitch or two differently to vary personality.

I sometimes add tiny bead accents or a stitched symbol on a tail base to imply magical powers or backstory for the character.

Swap the fluff around the neck for a faux fur trim or a crocheted collar to practice new textures and add a touch of luxury.

Experiment with stuffing levels for different feels: slightly firmer stuffing gives a sturdier display piece while softer stuffing makes the toy squishier and more huggable.

Use the pattern to create a whole family of kitsune in matching or contrasting colors β€” its a great way to build a themed collection or gift set.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

βœ— Skipping stitch markers during rounds can cause you to lose the start of the round; place a marker at the beginning of each round to maintain correct stitch counts. βœ— Rushing increases and decreases will lead to lopsided shaping; count stitches after every round and slow down when shaping parts for accuracy. βœ— Overstuffing small parts like ears and feet can distort shapes; stuff gradually and lightly, especially for ears and tail tips. βœ— Not securing yarn ends after color changes can cause unraveling later; weave in ends securely and hide them inside the stuffing for a neat finish.

β€” Assembly :

Step 1 :

Fill the base of the body with approximately 8 grams of poly pellets to add some weight to the body. You could also use a white stocking as a pouch for the poly pellets before inserting it into the body. Fill the rest of the body with fiberfill.

Step 2 :

To make the fur around the neck, cut 24 8cm strands of white yarn. Hook the middle of a strand through a stitch on Round 25 to form a loop (photo 1). Hook the ends of the strand into the loop to form a knot (photo 2). Repeat around Round 25 with the remaining strands (photo 3).

Step 3 :

Brush the fur around the neck with a slicker brush to make it fluffy (photo 4).

Step 4 :

Fold the ears slightly and position them on head, with the front part of the ear on Round 13 and the other end on Round 17 (photo 5). Photo 6 shows the position of the ends of the ears. Sew the ears to the head.

Step 5 :

Position the head on top of the body. Attach and sew the head to the body, adding more fibrefill to the neck before closing the seam (photo 7).

Step 6 :

Sew the foot and thigh of the hind leg together (photo 8). Position and sew the hind legs onto the sides of the body (photo 9).

Step 7 :

Trim the fur around the neck to your liking (photo 10).

Step 8 :

Optional: Brush all nine tails with a slicker brush to make them fluffy (photo 11).

Step 9 :

Sew the tails tightly together, according to the sequence: tail numbers 9 - 7 - 5 - 3 - 1 - 2 - 4 - 6 - 8 (photo 11). Make sure to sew across all the tails at the middle and the bottom of the tails.

Step 10 :

Attach and sew the tails to the back of the body (photo 12). Do make sure to test the balance of your kitsune before securing the tails to the body.

β€” Facial Features :

Info :

Now on to her face! I have written the method for embroidering her eyes and nose, but feel free to use any other methods you'd like.

Nose :

To embroider the nose, using brown embroidery thread, sew the outline of a small triangle measuring approximately 0.5 x 0.5 x 0.5 cm on the tip of the muzzle (photo 1). Fill the triangle by sewing vertical lines within (photo 2).

Eyes :

To embroider the eye, using brown embroidery thread, sew a straight line around twice, starting at Round 6 and ending at Round 10 (photo 3). Gently tug the straight line upwards at Round 9, to create an arch near the end of the eyes (photo 4). Separate one strand of the brown embroidery thread used for the eyes and bring the strand to sew over the arch to hold the arch in place (photo 4, 5). Repeat with the other eye. The inside corners of the eyes should be about 5 stitches apart.

Head markings :

Use the sky blue yarn to embroider the head markings. Sew a straight line in the middle of the head starting at Round 8 and ending at Round 12. Skip one stitch to the left of the line you just sew. Sew a shorter straight line starting at Round 8 and ending at Round 10. Repeat sewing another short line to the right of the middle line. Sew each line around one more time (photo 6).

Inside of the ears :

Using red or pink makeup blush, colour the ear flaps (photo 7).

Info :

Fasten, trim off and hide any excess yarn or thread.

Assembly Instructions

  • Fill the base of the body with approximately 8 grams of poly pellets for weight, then fill the rest of the body with fiberfill.
  • Make the fur ruff by cutting 24 strands of white yarn 8cm long, hook the middle through a stitch on Round 25, pull ends through the loop and knot; repeat around Round 25.
  • Brush the neck fur with a slicker brush to fluff it, then trim to the desired length for a neat look.
  • Position ears on head with the front of the ear on Round 13 and the back on Round 17, then sew them securely.
  • Sew the foot and thigh of each hind leg together, then position and sew hind legs onto the sides of the body.
  • Sew tails together in sequence (9 - 7 - 5 - 3 - 1 - 2 - 4 - 6 - 8), then test balance and sew the tails firmly to the back of the body.

Important Notes

  • πŸ’‘Use stitch markers to mark the beginning of each round for accurate stitch counts and easier shaping.
  • πŸ’‘Stuff parts gradually and less in small pieces like ears and tail tips to preserve the intended shape.
  • πŸ’‘Weave in and hide yarn ends as you go to keep the inside tidy and avoid long finishing sessions.
  • πŸ’‘When joining parts, pin them first to check placement and balance before sewing permanently.
